Why Plan Early

The Earlier You Plan, the More Options You Have

Without proper planning, transferring a business or estate can create significant financial and tax challenges. We help you prepare for the transitions that matter most.

Business Succession

Decide who takes over — and structure the transition so it works financially and tax-efficiently for everyone involved.

Estate Tax Planning

Understand the tax consequences of transfers, capital gains, and estate settlements before they happen.

Intergenerational Wealth

Plan how assets pass to the next generation — minimizing tax, protecting value, and achieving your goals.

Business Succession Planning

Succession Is About More Than Deciding Who Takes Over

Ownership, management, valuation, financing and taxes all play a role. We help you evaluate your options and build a plan that works for your goals and timeline.

Estate Tax Planning

Managing Tax Consequences at Death and During Transfers

Estate planning isn’t only about distributing assets, it’s about ensuring as much value as possible reaches your beneficiaries. We help identify the relevant tax considerations.

Trust & Intergenerational Wealth

Passing Wealth to the Next Generation

We help evaluate the tax and financial implications of wealth-transfer strategies and coordinate with your legal and financial advisors to ensure all the pieces work together.

Estate Questions

Common Estate & Succession Planning Questions

The earlier the better — ideally 5 to 10 years before any planned transition. Earlier planning opens up more tax-efficient options, including the Lifetime Capital Gains Exemption, corporate restructuring, and gradual ownership transfers. However, it’s never too late to start.
The LCGE allows qualifying individuals to shelter a significant amount of capital gains on the sale of qualifying small business corporation shares from tax. For 2024, the LCGE is over $1 million. Eligibility requires meeting certain tests — we help you understand whether your shares may qualify and how to plan around it.
Yes — for legal documents such as wills, powers of attorney, and trust agreements, you’ll need a qualified legal advisor. Our role is the accounting and tax side of your estate strategy: identifying tax consequences, modeling transfer scenarios, and coordinating the financial pieces with your legal team.
At death, there is a deemed disposition of all assets — including shares of a private corporation — at fair market value. This can trigger significant capital gains. Proper planning (including a well-structured shareholder agreement, life insurance, and estate freeze strategies) can reduce the impact and ensure a smooth transition.
