Ontarians who are planning a vacation (including family getaways) within the province this year could benefit from tax refund under the new Ontario Staycation Tax Credit program.
Ontarians will get a 20% credit on qualified accommodation between in the year 2022. You can claim a maximum of $1,000 for an individual and $2,000 for a family, for a maximum credit of $200 or $400, respectively. This refundable tax credit will apply when filing 2022 personal tax return.
This credit will also support the province’s tourism and hospitality sector industry.
Eligible expense must be:
- For a stay of less than a month
- incurred for leisure – not work or business related
- for accommodation booked directly with the accommodation provider (such as hotel websites, resort websites, etc.) or through an online accommodation platform (such as Airbnb)
